OVERVIEW
Founded in 1960, Berkshire Community College (BCC) was the first community college established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. During its first 12 years, BCC was located in downtown Pittsfield in a former junior high school made available by the city.
In 1972, the college moved to its present location occupying a magnificent 180-acre site four miles from the center of Pittsfield. Twelve years later, a satellite facility known as the South County Center opened in Great Barrington. Each year roughly 2,000 students enroll in day or evening credit courses at the main campus, off-campus sites, and/or online.
The vast majority of BCC students (97 percent) are Massachusetts residents with 94 percent coming from Berkshire County. In 2017, the College underwent $34 million in renovations to its main campus including state of art teaching labs and new learning experiences. In 2018, it launched the Gene Dellea Community Turf field on campus, offering community and club sports programs the chance to practice and play on turf field in the Berkshires. In 2019, BCC celebrated 50 years of nursing education and announced the Berkshire Community College Nursing and Allied Health Programs Endowment with major support from Berkshire Health Care Systems, demonstrating how collaboration is critical in meeting the needs of our local workforce. And, for 2020-2021, it expects to open its One Stop for Student Success as it continues to invest in the accessibility of the student experience.
