We are in mourning in America. Yesterday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol was devastating, but we unfortunately should not be shocked. In the United States, protests and peaceful demonstrations are a hallmark of our right to free speech and self-expression, yet yesterday's assault on the Capitol was neither. It was a riotous, violent display of an insurrection, incited by Members of the highest elected offices in this country.

In our pursuit for equity, we continue to work so that opportunities, freedoms, and security are equitably provided to all residents of this country. Yet yesterday's inadequate response to this violence – violence that put many people at risk and tragically took four lives – paled in comparison to what activists for racial justice experienced over the summer and further exposed the structural racism that continues to plague our country.

Community colleges are known as “Democracy’s Colleges” for a reason. It’s because they emulate the understood principles of this country, where the institutions were first proposed and created. This open door and commitment to opportunity for all reflects the ideals so many of us share – supporting individuals to pursue their dreams while promoting a more just society within their communities. It is in the wake of this exact moment and attack on our Government that we must commit ourselves to these ideals and values.

May we all find healing as we move forward.
