Community College Workforce Development Partnerships with Regional Businesses

  • Northern Essex Community College trained workers at Mainstream Global; a Hispanic owned and managed company in Lawrence that provides sustainable reverse supply chain solutions. By eliminating the language barrier between supervisors and line staff in the warehouse, Mainstream Global has improved productivity by 10%. With Microsoft Excel skills, office staff streamlined the company’s budgeting process and reduced redundant calls between headquarters and facilities in South and Central America.
  • North Shore Community College has partnered with GE Aviation in Lynn, Massachusetts to provide a customized educational and career pathway program that includes both a Certificate and Associate Degree in Manufacturing Technology.  This partnership is an excellent example of how community colleges are partnering with not only local business, but businesses that have a national and international component. The program provides students with an opportunity to achieve the American Dream by linking stackable education credentials/degrees to not just a job, but a sustainable career that leads to a better tomorrow. 
  • Mount Wachusett Community College partners with Nypro University (started in 1978) - housed on the grounds of Nypro, Inc, and boasts a “Learning Center” containing two classrooms. This Center houses the MWCC manufacturing equipment as well as processing equipment on loan from various manufacturers.  In collaboration with MWCC, FSU, and WPI, it offers credit and non-credit classes that can lead to a college degree. These courses are open to Nypro employees and members of the general public.  MWCC also rewrote its plastics technology curriculum in accordance with both industry recognized standards and the academic requirements necessary for the award of college credits and transferability of those credits. Upon the completion of the renovation and up-grade of the training lab at Nypro, MWCC moved its manufacturing equipment from its site in Devens to the training lab in Clinton.  This move was prompted by a desire to capitalize on the existence of the Nypro Institute laboratory and classroom space, and also to utilize the expertise of Nypro in the manufacturing field.
  • Middlesex Community College has had a long-standing partnership with Cabot Corporation, in both Billerica and Boston, offering training in areas such as Time Management, Public Speaking, and Newsletter Preparation.  Cabot contracted with Middlesex to design and deliver a Management Training program at the company’s Billerica location.  The training was offered to over 50 Cabot employees from various locations and included modules in Transitioning from Peer to Boss, Effective Communication, Creating Cohesiveness, Managing Conflict, and Strategies for Leadership Success.  This training was designed to improve the management skills of Cabot’s new first-line supervisors.
  • Massasoit Community College, is working with the Phia Group to provide Lean Training, Leadership and soft skills training. To date, over 100 workers have participated in this training program.
  • MassBay Community College has partnered with Web Industries, Inc. in Holliston, MA to provide on-site training in basic skills to prepare their employees for newer technologies in advanced manufacturing. The program was designed to fit the work schedule of two shifts of employees. The program began with 13 weeks of English as a Second Language and Introduction to Technology followed. Employees quickly moved through basic mathematic skills to Word, PowerPoint and Excel.  The program finishes with Mathematics for Manufacturing. Employees finishing each component are awarded certificates of completion. While enrolling in the trainings is voluntary, the attendance and enthusiasm for learning has exceeded expectations.
  • Cape Cod Community College is working with Cape Air on the development of an Aviation Maintenance Technician Certificate program leading to student certification by the Federal Aviation Administration in Airframe and Powerplant.
  • Bristol Community College (BCC) partnered with Needletech Products Inc, a medical device manufacturer in North Attleboro Massachusetts, to assess their operation, identify processes that could use improvement, and assist the company in applying for training funds through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund. BCC developed customized training and have helped Needletech to improve the efficiency and productivity of their overall operation in North Attleboro.
  • Bunker Hill Community College, has partnered with the Just-A-Start Corporation and the City of Cambridge for the Cambridge Biomed Careers Program.  This nine-month intensive program prepares low-income students with the basic technical and job skills necessary to enter the growing biotechnology field with living wage jobs while earning up to 18 college credits. With more than 360 graduates now employed in over 15 local biotech firms, from start-ups to international giants, BHCC has been a major force in the local success of the industry.
  • Springfield Technical Community College collaborates with Baystate Health Systems and Baycare Health Partners to support the region’s hospital and medical practice community in their transition to ICD-10 medical coding required by new federal regulation. It is critically important for all practices to be prepared to implement ICD-10 throughout their organization to insure an effective, efficient and successful transition with minimal impact on operations, patient satisfaction, and revenues.
  • In partnership with Franklin County Technical School, the Franklin Hampshire Regional Employment Board and Career Centers, Greenfield Community College has worked with Lead Employers VSS, Inc., Bete Fog Nozzle and 12 other manufacturing companies to develop and implement new advanced manufacturing training programs.
  • In collaboration with the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) and William J. Dean Technical and Vocational High School, Holyoke Community College has established the Cisco Network Academy in order to provide CCNA and CCNP certifications.  The program creates a training ladder from Dean High School to HCC and works to provide training for incumbent workers.
  • Berkshire Community College has developed an accelerated Technical Certificate program in Medical Coding in direct response to the needs of Berkshire Health Systems, one of Berkshire County’s largest employers. This certificate is part of a continuum of stackable credentials ranging from a non-credit medical coding certificate program to an A.S. Degree in Business Careers. The accelerated certificate requires only 17 credits and is designed to be completed by working adults within 12 months.
  • Quinsigamond Community College(QCC) works with Partners Healthcare to provide online training in Introductions to Medical Terminology to meet the needs of incumbent employees.  QCC has been providing online Introduction to Medical Terminology classes.  As part of the collaboration, QCC has been able to waive the prerequisite English requirement because of the preparatory work Partners Healthcare provides to their employees.
  • Roxbury Community College has partnered with CleanEdison, Inc. to provide advanced training to 20 incumbent workers from SolarCity, Inc. – a Massachusetts-based solar energy company.  This training was provided in:  Business Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst and Envelope Shell; Advanced Solar Electric; and Advanced Solar Electric, held at RCC’s Solar Energy Laboratory. This advanced and renewable energy skills training has been important for SolarCity to maintain its service competitiveness in rapidly evolving markets.
  • Holyoke Community College has partnered with Springfield Technical Community College to form Training and Workforce Options (TWO), which provides custom contract training for area businesses. In order to meet the potential need for more than 10,000 casino related jobs, TWO formed the Massachusetts Casino Careers Training Institute. In collaboration with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, potential casino developers, community college partners, and regional workforce development entities, the Institute has worked to organize recruitment, develop training and manage placement for the jobs resulting from this new-to-Massachusetts industry
  • Massachusetts Community Colleges have always worked together on important matters of policy andcoordination that impact our entire segment of public higher education.  The $20 million U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to the Massachusetts Community Colleges collectively is agood example of this type of efficient and successful collaboration as a community college segment.  The nationally recognized proposal entitled “Massachusetts Community College and Workforce Development Transformation Agenda” was submitted by all 15 Community Colleges and in partnership with the Commonwealth’s workforce system and key employer partners that align to the Commonwealth’s in-demand industry fields.
